Russian Foreign Minister said that if the European Union evaluates regional energy security in a responsible way, it will most likely support Russia's Turkish Stream gas pipeline project.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – If the European Union evaluates regional energy security in a responsible way, it will most likely support Russia's Turkish Stream gas pipeline project, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

"I believe that if the European Union bases its approach [to the proposed Turkish Stream] on a critical evaluation of the situation, taking into consideration its own interest in ensuring European energy security, Brussels will support these talks [on the pipeline project between Russia and European states] and contribute to the realization of these ideas," Lavrov said at a press conference following a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Ivica Dacic in Belgrade.

The US opposes the Russian South Stream gas pipeline project because it wants to supply gas to Europe itself, President Putin said on Tuesday. He called the situation an "ordinary competitive struggle."

“They do everything to disrupt this contract. There is nothing unusual here. This is an ordinary competitive struggle. In the course of this competition, political tools are also being used,” the Russian president said after holding talks with his Austrian counterpart, President Heinz Fischer, in Vienna.

"Regarding the western route, the talks are in full swing both in the field of technic specifications and commercial terms," Dvorkovich added

EIJING, April 21. /TASS/. Russia plans to finalize talks on gas supplies to China via western route, known as Altai, is in the current year, Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said Tuesday.
"We aim at doing this (finalizing the talks - TASS) in the current year though we are not setting any particular dates," he said.
